Disability Stories Project

In this video interview series, the CHRIL team talks with disability advocates about their past struggles with the US healthcare system and their words of advice as we seek to reform it.

Daniella’s Story

As a concert harpist with a PhD, Daniella’s future couldn’t have been brighter, but one major accident threw that future into question. Amidst the weight of a $30,000 ambulance bill and 13 surgeries, she was forced to wade through America’s thorny healthcare system in search of support.

Mels’ Story

Caught in the crossroads of disability and queer identity, Mels felt pressure to align with one community over the other, but instead decided to advocate for the intersection between them. Yet no matter their choice, the hope for a healthcare system that supports either seems distant.

Michael’s Story

At the NW ADA Center Michael advocates for independent living and disability rights using the lens of his own hearing impairment. Recounting his experiences with the medical system, he offers advice to Americans with disabilities so that they can speak up for the treatment they deserve.

Ericka’s Story

After encountering ableism at a young age, Ericka grew up to develop health problems of her own. Hindered by the limits of her insurance and the misunderstanding healthcare workers have for her conditions, she dreads the prospect that any new emergency could bankrupt her.

Anita’s Story

As a person with multiple disabilities, Anita feels her issues with mental health have caused healthcare workers to discount her other conditions. She believes that, even if we establish a system of universal coverage, we have a long way to go to adapt to the unique needs of disabled people.
